Lead Advanced Practice Professional (APP)
Location: Stanford Health Care

Job Summary
The Lead Advanced Practice Professional (APP) provides supervision and management of advanced practice providers within a defined clinical service line. This role offers clinical leadership, operational partnership, and professional development oversight for APP staff. The Lead APP works collaboratively with physician and operational leaders and has responsibility for hiring, performance management, and career development of APPs. The role functions under the approved job description for Nurse Practitioner (NP), Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS), Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), or Physician Assistant (PA) as established by the Interdisciplinary Practice Committee (IDPC). A minimum of 10 APPs must be supervised.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Oversight and Leadership

  • Co-direct clinical, operational, and administrative initiatives in partnership with the Service Line Medical Director and unit nursing leadership
  • Lead, mentor, and supervise APP staff, ensuring clinical competence and adherence to policies
  • Conduct regular meetings, practice evaluations, and case reviews with APPs and physicians
  • Orient and educate new and existing APP staff
  • Investigate and respond to patient and family concerns related to care
  • Represent the APP workforce on hospital-wide, professional, and evaluation committees
  • Ensure completion of operational mandates and organizational initiatives

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Participate in financial planning and service line budgeting activities
  • Support hiring, evaluation, coaching, mentoring, and disciplinary processes for APPs
  • Coordinate APP staffing and scheduling
  • Lead quality improvement and process improvement initiatives
  • Investigate and resolve operational issues
  • Provide 24-hour administrator on-call coverage for the service line
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Legal and Regulatory Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with Medical Staff Services initiatives, policies, and procedures
  • Advocate for and support practice models that enable APPs to work at the top of their scope of practice
  • Participate in regional and national discussions impacting advanced practice
  • Collaborate with hospital operations on funding, billing, and reimbursement models
  • Engage in legislative and health policy initiatives affecting advanced practice providers

Education Requirements

  • Advanced Practice Nurse: Master’s or Doctorate degree in Nursing or related healthcare field from an accredited institution
  • Physician Assistant: Bachelor’s degree in Science, Physician Assistant Studies, or a healthcare-related field from an accredited institution

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a licensed APP (PA, NP, CNS, or CRNA)
  • Three (3) or more years of APP experience preferred
  • Previous management or leadership experience preferred

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong clinical expertise and specialty-specific knowledge
  • Knowledge of management principles, including hiring, performance evaluation, coaching, discipline, and budgeting
  • Experience with practice evaluation, quality improvement, and process improvement
  • Knowledge of professional, regulatory, and national APP initiatives
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written, verbal, individual, and group settings
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with diverse stakeholders at all organizational levels
  • Strong organizational, prioritization, and independent work skills
  • Ability to promote evidence-based practice, innovation, education, and professional inquiry
  • Demonstrated leadership, counseling, and staff recognition skills
  • Ability to contribute positively to institution-wide and advanced practice initiatives
  • Ability to work full-time

Licensure and Certification Requirements

  • Physician Assistant: Current California Physician Assistant license
    OR
  • Registered Nurse: Valid California RN license AND one of the following:
    • Nurse Practitioner (NP) with current national certification
    • Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) with current national certification
    • Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) with current national certification

Salary Information : Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $100.03 - $132.51 per hour The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
