Program Overview

SDNeurosurgery (SDN) and South Bay Neurosurgery (SBN) have partnered to offer a limited Neurosurgery Physician Assistant and Nurse Practitioner Fellowship. We invite graduates from accredited physician assistant and nurse practitioner programs eager to advance their expertise in neurosurgery to apply.

Our Fellowship delivers a comprehensive, immersive experience in the field of neurosurgery. As an SDN-SBN Fellow, you'll undergo meticulous, hands-on training from our experienced neurosurgeons and neurosurgical nurse practitioners.

The SDN-SBN Neurosurgery Physician Assistant and Nurse Practitioner Fellowship program has a unified mission. We seek to provide our Fellows with a clinically rigorous, academically challenging environment. Here, they develop the knowledge base and on-the-job training required to become an elite neurosurgical/spine surgery physician assistant or nurse practitioner.

Upon completion of the program, our Fellows are equipped to deliver the highest level of comprehensive care for neurosurgical patients, and they can anticipate competitive compensation in the workplace.

This full-time fellowship spans 24 months and comprises both didactic and clinical components. Fellows can expect to dedicate an average of 40-60 hours per week to operative and clinical-based work. We aim for our Fellows to engage with 800 in-clinic patients and 500 in-hospital patients, and assist in 300 surgeries annually.

After successfully graduating from this Fellowship, you will receive a Certificate of Completion from SDNeurosurgery and South Bay Neurosurgery. Additionally, we will provide you with assistance in securing employment as a neurosurgical physician assistant or nurse practitioner.

Curriculum

The SDN-SBN Neurosurgery Physician Assistant and Nurse Practitioner Fellowship curriculum includes:

Accelerated learning in the clinical setting.

  • Patient Intake: taking patient history; performing exams; diagnosing and implementing treatment.
  • Patient Care and Aftercare: ordering and interpreting tests; managing critical conditions; follow-up after treatment and post-op.
  • Patient Education: guiding patients on preventive health care; informing them of non-surgical treatments; and assisting them with patients’ rights.
  • Research Opportunities: assisting with the research, writing, and publication of peer-reviewed papers and case reports.

Hands-on training in the hospital setting.

  • Mastering OR first-assist techniques with cerebrovascular surgery, surgery of the peripheral nervous system, spinal surgery; cranial and skull base surgery, and stereotactic and functional neurosurgery.
  • Performing procedures under supervision.

On-the-job evaluations and tests.

  • Reading and interpretation of X-rays
  • Grand rounds presentations
  • Demonstration of skills
  • Neurosurgery staff review

  • Neurosurgical oncology
  • Neurosurgical critical care
  • Pain management and physical medicine and rehabilitation
  • General and stroke neurology
  • Neuroradiology
  • Neurosurgical trauma

Schedule

Our Fellows will be expected to commit to 8 to 10-hour days, five days a week. Fellows will also be on call several days a month, including some weekend days.

Physician Assistant Fellows will serve as surgical first assistants at several local hospitals in the area:

Scripps La Jolla, Scripps Encinitas, Scripps Mercy/Chula Vista, Sharp Grossmont, Sharp Chula Vista, Paradise Valley Hospital, Alvarado Hospital Medical Center, Tri-City Medical Center, Palomar Medical Center, Inland Valley Medical Center, United Surgery Centers, Surgery Center of San Diego, Encompass Surgery Center.

Faculty

The SDN-SBN Neurosurgery Physician Assistant and Nurse Practitioner Fellowship will be overseen by the neurosurgeons at United Medical Doctors: Dr. Kevin Yoo, Dr. Bill Mastrodimos, and Dr. Dan White.

Neurosurgical nurse practitioner Kaye Elamparo will serve as the fellowship's supervisor. Dr. Yoo also holds the position of Affiliate Clinical Faculty at Point Loma Nazarene University, Department of Physician Assistant Education in San Diego, California.

Admissions

Upon inquiry, all applicants will receive an application along with contact information for any inquiries. Applicants who are accepted, named as alternates, or not accepted will receive written notification. Accepted candidates must respond in writing to accept their position as an SDN-SBN Fellow within two (2) weeks of receiving an acceptance letter. Before the commencement of the Fellowship, candidates will be required to undergo a full background check.

Application Components

To apply for the SDN-SBN Neurosurgery Physician Assistant and Nurse Practitioner Fellowship, all applicants are required to submit the following documents:

  • Personal Statement
  • Official transcript from your graduating physician assistant or nurse practitioner program
  • Copy of your physician assistant or nurse practitioner program graduation diploma or certificate
  • Proof of valid and active licensure to practice as a physician assistant or registered nurse and nurse practitioner in the State of California
  • Letters of Recommendation: Please review the following guidelines to ensure the correct submission of your letters of recommendation.

· One (1) letter of recommendation from the program director or current employing physician.

· Two (2) letters of recommendation from recent supervising physicians.

· One (1) letter of recommendation from a peer.


To ensure compliance with the application requirements, please ensure that you meet the following criteria:

  • Legal employment in the State of California (possessing a valid passport).
  • Holding an unrestricted license to practice as an allied health professional in the state of California.
  • Possessing a current DEA license.
  • Certification by CAPA for the Controlled Substance Education Course.
  • Holding active CPR certification, BLS, and ACLS.

Stipend

The SDN-SBN Neurosurgery Physician Assistant and Nurse Practitioner Fellowship offers an annual compensation of $120,000 to $200,000, which will be paid to you in biweekly installments over the course of 24 months. Additionally, there will be an on-call stipend for taking calls with neurosurgeons at our affiliated hospitals. With the call stipend, a percentage of collections bonuses, and other sources of incentivized income, the total compensation is expected to exceed $130,000 in the first year and $150,000 in the second year. It's important to note that there are no tuition fees associated with the fellowship.

Living Expenses:

Living expenses, including transportation, housing, and meals, are the responsibility of the Fellow.
